Software Developer | Math-Driven Solutions & Algorithms

Kaan Baha Sever

Hi, and welcome. I'm Kaan, a software developer in Istanbul. I work mostly in modern C++ and Go, and I'm about to finish my mathematics degree at Istanbul University. As a child I took things apart to see how they worked. That curiosity led me to space, then to rockets, and in the end to the software I write today. Mathematics has been with me at every step: it taught me to understand a problem well before solving it, and then to show why the solution is right. Here you'll find my projects, posts on mathematics and algorithms, small tools that run in your browser, and games you can play against the computer. Start wherever you like, and enjoy your visit.

Experience

  1. Software Developer

    crowd.inc

    July 2021 to March 2024

crowd.inc was a platform where people shared their ideas and found help for them. It had hundreds of users and was home to many projects, ideas and goals; later we turned towards private ideas. I owned the software development lifecycle end to end, from relational schema design in PostgreSQL to RESTful APIs in Python and Flask with a jQuery front end.

    • Designed granular role-based access control (RBAC) with strict permission boundaries between public and private data.
    • Built scalable feed pagination and dynamic data loading across the API and the front end.
    • Provisioned and configured the Linux servers the platform ran on.
    • Kept the system reliable through rigorous unit and integration testing.

    • Flask
    • PostgreSQL

From mathematics to systems

The full story

How the mathematics turned into software, in four chapters.

  1. Ch. 1

    Algorithmic foundations

    2016 – 2019 · C# · MS SQL

It began in 2016 with C# at a vocational high school: data structures, algorithms, then database applications on MS SQL. My graduation projects were desktop Tic-Tac-Toe and Battleship, the game I played with my father as a child; the Hunt & Target algorithm came later.

  2. Ch. 2

    Rocket avionics

    2019 – 2022 · Rocket and Space Club

At the Istanbul University Rocket and Space Club, our team built one low-altitude (5,000 ft) and two high-altitude (10,000 ft) rockets. I wrote the flight avionics firmware and the parachute deployment control, filtered the sensor data with Kalman filters and used PID in our experiments.

  3. Ch. 3

    Autonomous parachute guidance

    Research · Python

An experimental project with university friends: a parachute payload that steers itself to a chosen landing point. A friend built the mechanics; I wrote the decision algorithm with linear algebra and a simulation to test it in, using the law of cosines and atan2 for the angles.

  4. Ch. 4

    Flight-physics simulation

    2020 prototype · C++ rewrite

One project that keeps evolving. In 2020 I wrote a narrow Python prototype that computes rocket trajectories in three dimensions. Now I am rewriting it from scratch in modern C++ as Rocket-Up, an open-source aerodynamic simulation engine for high-power rockets.

Playground

Small things to use right here: games against algorithmic opponents, a terminal, and browser tools that keep your files on your device.

  • Game

    Battleship

Hunt & target · probability density

Place your fleet and duel a computer admiral that hunts with a probability density map, then closes in on every hit.

  • Game

    Tic-tac-toe

    Minimax · alpha–beta pruning

The classic 3×3 game against an opponent that searches the whole game tree. On the hardest level, a draw is the best you can do.

  • Terminal

    Console

Explore this site from a terminal, one command at a time.

  • Tool

    Notepad

A distraction-free plain-text editor with zen mode, autosave in your browser, find & replace with regular expressions, and live line and word counts.

  • Tool

    Split PDF

Preview every page as a thumbnail, pick pages by clicking or typing ranges like 1-3, 5, and download the result. Or split into parts as a ZIP.

  • Tool

    Password generator

Cryptographically secure random passwords with length and character-set options and a strength estimate.
